best time to Visit Koh Samui

Koh Samui is one of the best places to visit in Thailand. And choosing when to visit Koh Samui will mostly depend on what kind of holidays you are looking for. Every month has something to recommend to visitors. There are three main seasons in Koh Samui. Check them out and find out what is the best time to visit Koh Samui for you.

Mid-November to mid-February

Some call it the dry season, as it almost never rains during these months. Others call it the “cool” season, as the temperatures are generally lower than during the rest of the year. As much as the latter is true, there is no need to worry: it is always warm in Thailand. You might have to wear your jumper once or twice in the evening, but nothing more than that. Some would say that the dry season is the best time to visit Thailand.  The weather during these months is always good while temperatures never get unbearably hot. Others would advise avoiding Thailand at this time, as it is when the biggest tourist crowds come to the country. It’s then up to you to see if you favor great weather over more tranquility, or vice-versa.

March to May

The “hot season”, a name that is definitely accurate. It is not rare during this period to see temperatures rise above 40° in the afternoon. If you cannot handle high heats, then I wouldn’t recommend that you come during this time. However, if you do, it could be the best moment for you to come visit: the “hot season” is one of the times when Thailand has the lowest tourism activity, which means visiting around will be much more peaceful and everything is much cheaper. Also, note that mid-April is also when Songkran festival occurs. This is the biggest celebration in Thailand and one of the unique thing to discover in Thailand! Watch, and partake in, this huge 5-day festival where people throw water on each other to celebrate the Buddhist New Year. A truly unique experience!

June to October

The mighty monsoon! Not so mighty actually… Especially in Samui where it actually pours down only for a month or two. June to September is generally fine with some short heavy showers sometimes in the evening. October and the beginning of November generally get wetter, and it isn’t rare to get heavy showers during several days in a row. If you’re not into heavy heats but want to avoid big tourist crowds, then going to Samui between June and September is probably your best option. Although there will be more visitors than during the hot season, the monsoon season is far from being crowded like the dry season.

Also, note that the weather forecast for Koh Samui is generally pretty inaccurate  It is quite common to have a rainy forecast for the day to finally end up with a sunny/blue sky type of day.
