How to Find a Cheap Apartment Anywhere in the World

How to find cheap apartment

Nowadays helps to Couchsurfing and many other resources, you can travel for free and always find a place to stay without spending a penny. But it usually means jumping from one city to another every few days. But once you have decided to settle down at some place for a month or few, you’ll feel a need of having your private permanent place for a living. To find a cheap apartment anywhere in the world is not so difficult if you know where to look for it.

Craigslist & Gumtree

Craigslist and Gumtree are the websites that work n some countries and that give a great choice of a cheap apartment. In the United States, Craigslist is much bigger than Gumtree, in Europe Gumtree is much bigger. In Asia, Craigslist has a small presence but is mostly there to cater to foreigners. On these sites, you’ll sometimes be able to find an apartment depending on what country you’re in. If you’re in a western country, you’ll almost definitely be able to find an apartment using online classifieds.

CouchSurfing

You can not only travel for free with Couchsurfing, hosts of which you are based almost in all the cities. You can also use this website to communicate with the hosts directly and ask if they can give you a room for rent for a month or more. Sometimes on Couchsurfing, you can even find special groups where people give a space in their houses in a long-term. Of course, to stay at the host’s house for 1,2 or 3 months won’t be free like if you stay as a Couchsurfer just for a few days. But it can be a good opportunity to find a cheap place to live.

For example, when I came to Porto, Portugal, I was looking for a room to rent for 3 months. I went to Couchsurfing website and started to write the hosts if someone of them can give me a room in a rent for a few months. Like that, I found two guys who had a free room in their apartment and I rent it for a really cheap price in the city center of Porto. And I didn’t pay any commission or deposit on the flat.

Airbnb

For short-term stays, you can sometimes find decent deals on Airbnb. Generally, they’ll be slightly more than finding it independently, but it can also really help when you’re in a non-English speaking country. Make sure to check the “weekly” rates in addition to the “daily” rates as you can save a lot of money by booking a longer period of time.

Hostel

The hostel is another great opportunity to get a place for a living on a budget. There are many hostel and hotel websites on the internet that you can check. I usually use Hostelworld.com or sometimes also checking in Booking.com. At them both, you can find the hostels as well as the hotels with discounts. At some hostels, you can book a bed or room for a long-term and for a really good price. But don’t forget also to check the reviews and pick not only super cheap but a nice place for a staying.

Local apartment listing

It can seem a bit more difficult and take more knowledge, but searching at the local apartment listing or websites can be a really good chance to find a really cheap apartment. You can save 1/2 or 1/3 of everything you will find on Airbnb. If you don’t know the local language, use Google Translate. You can also get to know about local apartment websites from the hostel staff. Some of my friends found a good and cheap apartment like that. So you lose nothing trying it!
