What is it?

Bocadillo de calamares is one of the typical food in Madrid. You might not find this dish in other cities of Spain, so I highly recommend you to try it while your staying in the capital. Bocadillo de calamares looks quite simple – just white bread with the fried squids inside. But you should try it in the right place to understand why everyone is so obsessed with this dish.

Where to buy it?

bar la campana in MadridThe most famous place within the locals and now-days tourists as well is the bar “La Campana” at the Plaza Mayor. They make the best bocadillo de calamares in Madrid, by my opinion.

The price is 2,7 euros for one bocadillo.

Atmosphere is also matter

plaza de la provincia, MadridTypically, the bar “La Campana” is always crowded and noisy. So when the weather is nice you can not stay at inside the bar but take away the bocadillo and eat it at some nice place on the street. For example, my favorite place in Madrid to eat this dish is the Plaza de la Provincia. It’s just a few minutes up the street from the “La Campana”. There you’ll find a fountain where you can take a sit and eat the bocadillo de calamares like all the locals do.

Don’t forget the drinks. Where to buy the cheapest?

As for the drinks, you can buy them at the bar “La Campana” while ordering bocadillo or do it in the cheaper way and buy them in Chinese bazar (small grocery store). You can find it at the Plaza de la Provincia. Having found the fountain, there will be two bars that also serve the bocadillo (but which is not so tasty and with fewer squids comparing with the “La Campana”. So this Chinese small shop is next to that two bars. You can see on the picture how it looks. The drinks there are cheaper comparing with the bars: beer, juice, coca-cola, water for approximately 0,80 cents for each one.

So now you prepare to take a sit at the fountain at la plaza and finally enjoy your bocadillo de calamares.
