The system of public transportation in modern Thailand is up to par with any western country and in some cases, even better. Besides many airports which serve the great selection of domestic air routes that give the travelers a unique opportunity to visit even the most remote parts of Thailand, there are also a great road and railroad systems. Transport in Thailand has also a fantastic urban and intercity bus systems – they allow everyone to get around very easily and cheaply. Rural areas also have some unique transportation options that are popular with tourists. BTS
This transport system essentially transformed Bangkok in a good way. Before it was introduced, the city was a nightmare to get around in. Nowadays, many of the destinations can be reached in minutes thanks to the BTS. The system currently consists of two lines which are perfect for exploring the central part of Bangkok. It offers nice and modern air-conditioned cars and some of the stops include Bangkok’s major shopping destinations, like MBK Mall and Siam Paragon.
MRT
Mass Rapid Transit is a convenient and inexpensive way to get from northern Bangkok to south of the city’s center. The line starts close to the railroad connection point, Bang Sue and ends at Hua Lum Phong – the major railroad station in Bangkok. It also has a station near the airport, Chatuchak, where you can catch the train to Mo Chit for a connection to BTS to go to the city center.
Songthaew
Songthaew is a converted pickup truck with two benches installed in the back. It is used a form of shared transportation in Thailand.
The System Of Canals
Bangkok is sometimes referred to as Venice of the East – this is due to the fact that the city has many canals which serve as one of the transportation modes within the capital. The actual travel takes place in an express boat. It is fast and inexpensive and the only downside is that you can get a little wet every once in a while because of another boat passing by.
Taxi Meter
Taxi service in Thailand is well-priced and is overall a great choice for tourists. The taxicabs come in many colors. Green and yellow color means that the taxi it is operator owned, and other colors mean that the cabs are owned by companies.
Tuk-Tuk
Tuk-Tuks one of the most popular transportation modes in Thailand. They pretty much serve any purpose and can be used on any terrain. Word of advice: make sure you agree on the cost beforehand with the driver, as they can sometimes quote astronomical prices; also, it is often cheaper to take a regular taxi, especially for short trips. But do try it at least once during your trip to Thailand.
Bus System
You we’ll be hard-pressed to find a more inexpensive, organized and efficient bus system anywhere in the world. Probably the only issue with it is that you actually have to share a bus with other passengers.
Intercity Coaches
Any destination in Thailand, no matter how far away it may be, can be reached by an efficient intercity or inter-province bus system. The stations are located throughout the country and offer daily 24-hour service.
In conclusion, let us emphasize that it is really easy to get around in Thailand. Simply do some additional research on the places you intend to visit and what would be the best way of getting there.
